What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition in which the airways become inflamed and narrowed, causing wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. With the right plan, most patients achieve full, active lives.

Types of asthma

  • Allergic asthma: triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.
  • Exercise-induced asthma: symptoms brought on by physical activity.
  • Cough-variant asthma: a persistent cough is the main symptom.

Asthma control test

A simple questionnaire helps gauge how well your asthma is controlled and whether your treatment plan needs adjusting. Your provider will review your score with you at each visit.

Action plan basics

Every patient receives a written asthma action plan with daily management steps, how to handle worsening symptoms, and when to seek emergency care. Share it with your school, coach, or workplace.

When to see a specialist

If you use a rescue inhaler more than twice a week, wake at night with symptoms, or limit activities because of asthma, it's time for a specialist evaluation.

Biologic treatment options

For moderate-to-severe asthma, biologic therapies such as Xolair target specific pathways in the immune system to reduce attacks and improve control when standard inhalers aren't enough.
