What is allergy skin testing?

Allergy skin testing helps identify the specific allergens triggering your symptoms. The two most common methods are prick/puncture testing, which places a tiny amount of allergen just under the skin surface, and intradermal testing, which injects a small amount slightly deeper for more sensitive results.

What to expect

Testing is quick and generally well tolerated. Results are read within 15–20 minutes, and you will leave with a clear picture of your triggers. Most patients experience only mild, temporary itching at the test sites.

How to prepare

• Stop antihistamines 5–7 days before your appointment (our team will give you a full list).
• Avoid topical creams on the testing area the day of your visit.
• Wear a short-sleeve shirt for easy access to your arms or back.

Reading your results

A small raised bump (wheal) with surrounding redness indicates sensitivity to that allergen. Your provider will review the results with you and build a personalized treatment plan based on your specific triggers.
